Northern Cleantech Showcase Bridges Canadian Cleantech to China

Kachan & Co. event in partnership with Ernst & Young introduced Canadian cleantech companies to Chinese investors and enterprises.

Seven Canadian clean technology companies took steps last week to expand their Chinese investment and business connections.

Northern Cleantech Showcase China 2011 – produced by cleantech research and advisory company Kachan & Co., Ernst & Young, the Jiaxing Xiuzhou Industrial Park near Shanghai and other partners – introduced successful applicants to leading Chinese industrialists and large corporations, joint venture partners, potential licensors and investors in events in Beijing and Shanghai, September 20th and 22nd.

To be considered, Canadian cleantech companies filled in an online form. There were no fees to apply or to participate if chosen. An independent selection committee of event partners and prominent venture capital firms selected presenting companies based on criteria such as innovation and differentiation, market opportunity, status of product commercialization and ability to execute.

“Canada’s clean technology innovation is world class,” said Kachan & Co. Managing Partner Dallas Kachan. “The Northern Cleantech Showcase events aim to help Canadian cleantech companies propel their businesses with connections to international capital and sales opportunities.”

Companies chosen for the showcase received a workshop and pitch training session in Toronto or Vancouver with Kachan and partners in advance of the event.

“The complimentary half-day bootcamp prepping us to appear on stage was unexpectedly full of information and very worthwhile,” said Jack MacDonnell, President & CEO of Northern Cleantech Showcase China 2011 presenting company EnerMotion.

Presenting companies, in alphabetical order, included:

  •     Delaware Power Systems, Richmond, British Columbia: Technology for EV and PHEV battery systems
  •     EnerMotion, Caledon, Ontario: Waste heat recovery from vehicle engines
  •     Enovex, Saint John, New Brunswick: Carbon capture with lower capital cost and energy requirements
  •     Eve Innovations, Vancouver, British Columbia: Coal-like solid fuel from waste
  •     exchangenergy, Vancouver, British Columbia: Geoexchange expertise
  •     Remco Solid Stage Lighting, Toronto, Ontario: Power & thermal breakthroughs for high power LED lighting
  •     Vizimax, Longueuil, Quebec: Automation systems for power grid modernization

The companies were well received by attendees. “The presentations were informative and we made connections to interesting new companies,” said Qiyong Cao, director of research for leading Chinese cleantech venture investor Tsing Capital.
